Constraints on Long-Term Seismic Hazard From Vulnerable Stalagmites

چکیده

As for any model/theory, a probabilistic seismic hazard analysis (PSHA) model is best tested by comparing its predictions with observations that are independent, e.g. which have not been used for creating the model. Arguably, the most valuable information in the context of seismic hazard analysis is information on long-term hazard, namely maximum intensities (or magnitudes) occuring over time intervals that are at least as long as a seismic cycle. Such long-term information can in principle be gained from intact stalagmites in natural caves, and we outline the approach here. Sensitive stalagmites have survived all earthquakes that have occurred over their long time span, e.g. over thousands of years or more depending on the age of the stalagmite. Their “survival” requires that the horizontal ground acceleration has never exceeded a certain critical value within that period. Such information is very valuable, even if it concerns only a single site, namely that of a particularly sensitive infrastructure.

Estimation the upper limit of prehistoric peak ground acceleration using the parameters of intact stalagmites and the mechanical properties of broken stalagmites in Domica cave, Slovakia

Suitably shaped (tall, slim and more or less cylindriform), vulnerable, intact stalagmites (STM) in Domica cave have been examined. Some of these STMs are suitable to estimate the upper limit for horizontal peak ground acceleration generated by paleoearthquake. This research is the continuation of our previous examination of STMs in Baradla cave, north-east Hungary. The density, the Young’s mod...

Estimating the upper limit of prehistoric peak ground acceleration using an in situ, intact and vulnerable stalagmite from Plavecká priepast cave (Detrekői-zsomboly), Little Carpathians, Slovakia—first results

Earthquakes hit urban centres in Europe infrequently, but occasionally with disastrous effects. Obtaining an unbiased view of seismic hazard (and risk) is therefore very important. In principle, the best way to test probabilistic seismic hazard assessments (PSHAs) is to compare them with observations that are entirely independent of the procedure used to produce PSHA models. Arguably, the most ...

Ancient Iranian Earthquakes: Chehr-Abad Salt Mine

Modern plate tectonic theory, the development of earthquake prediction and the mitigation of earthquake hazards are based on the study of earthquakes during the twentieth century. Investigation of earthquakes over a much longer period, although in no way invalidating the global importance of plate tectonics, shows that patterns of seismic activity do change with time and that areas of intense s...

The field of natural hazards research has a rich history in geography, appropriately so because it involves conflicts between physical processes and human systems. Natural events occur without direct human effect and endanger his social life. Events that enforce average annual up to 150000 human damages and more than 140 milliard dollars financial damages on counties and especially developing c...
